About Stepping Out
Set in a dingy North London church hall the play follows eight women from very different backgrounds and motivations as they attend weekly tap dancing lessons. Mavis, their teacher is trapped in an unhappy relationship and has never realised her dancing promise and is supported by the grumpy but kind-hearted Mrs Fraser as accompanist. Despite the students first treating the classes as social occasions, and showing little talent, they gradually develop their co ordination and cohesiveness. The dance routines are the background to the development of the relationships and interaction of the group.
