At the EGM on 10th August 2023, a vote was held on the proposal to close BTG. The proposal was carried by a substantial majority. This was a very sad moment for all of us, and there was no doubting the strength of feeling among members as we made this difficult decision. We now have to move on, and deal with the practical matters: the clearing of the barn, distribution of its contents, and the donation of our remaining funds.
A committee has been formed to deal with the closing process: Ben, David, Roger, Helen and myself. It was agreed at the EGM that the contents of the barn should be given free of charge to any local group (not just theatre-related) who can make use of them. If you have suggestions of groups who could benefit, please contact any committee member or reply to this email.
According to our constitution the funds remaining must be “donated to a recognised charity”: the general feeling at the EGM was that “recognised charity” should be interpreted in the broad sense of groups serving the community (and the arts in particular), so it can include other amateur theatre groups, for example, as well as charities. If you have suggestions please let us know. All suggestions will eventually be put to the membership for approval before a decision is made.
Once we have dealt with all practical and financial matters we will determine a formal “end date” for the group, and arrange a party to allow current and former members to come together to remember and celebrate all the good times we have shared. We owe a huge “thank you” to the committee (Kay, Laura, Phil, David, Peter) for steering the group through the past two difficult years, and also to ALL members who have contributed to the life of the group in countless ways over the last 72 years.
