The Play's The Thing
by Ferenc Molnár
performed by BTG May 2002
The action of the play takes place in a room in a castle on the Italian Rivera on a summer's day in 1929
It’s the roaring ‘20s and two successful (but constantly bickering) playwrights accompany their young protégé composer on an impromptu visit to a chateau in the south of France. Their idea is to surprise the young composer’s fiancé who is taking a brief (and luxurious) holiday before starting in their new West End show. But when they overhear the actress and her former lover (an ageing ‘lovey’) engaged in some pretty racy dialogue the young composer is distraught and threatens to tear-up the score to their new show. To save the day one of the playwrights decides to write a play based on the racy dialogue they have all overheard but give it an altogether innocent interpretation. At the same time the playwright wants to teach both the errant fiancé and her former lover a lesson they won’t forget.
