Children In Uniform

by Crista Winsloe

performed by BTG June 1956

A Play

Set in a cold German boarding school for girls at the outbreak of The War, "Children In Uniform" tells the story of an orphaned girl, sent away to this institution.  Her misdirected emotions finds her falling in love with her female teacher.  The scorn and shame of this love perceived by her headmistress leads the little girl to feel isolated and suicidal.

The hard bleakness of this emotional story is reflected in the cold greys of both the pupils uniforms and the teacher's costumes, broken only by flashes of purple in the school badges and sashes.  When she first comes to the school, we see the little girl in a deep red, connecting her stylistically to her beloved teacher, before she too is depersonalised to become just another of the cold grey children in uniform.
